The fact is that each and every one of these could be just a short distance from your home in Adur and Worthing - and we want to celebrate them.

Our green areas are home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, but if we manage those sites too tightly we remove the habitat they need.

This spring and summer, Adur & Worthing Councils are encouraging the community to explore the green spaces around our area to try to spot the tiny treasures that we often don’t see. 

To help, we’ll be allowing sections of every area to renature this summer so that wildlife and wildflowers can flourish. We’ve also planted extra bulbs to produce the flowers to help our bees and insects thrive and have spread wildflower seeds.

We’ll be publishing photos on our Facebook feed showing what our rangers have found on their travels and we’d like you to add your images too. 

We’ve published mowing maps that show exactly where we’re going to regularly cut the grass and where your best chances are of finding nature on your doorstep.

Cllr Edward Crouch, Worthing’s executive member for the environment, said: “We’re lucky enough to live in an area where we can find nature on our doorstep, not only on the South Downs but in our parks and recreation grounds.

“We want to celebrate the wildlife that lives all around us and to help it to survive and thrive.”

Cllr Emma Evans, Adur’s executive member for the environment, said: “Visiting our green spaces is a great way to relax and unwind from the pressures of daily life. 

“By giving just a helping hand to nature we allow bugs and beetles, birds and bats to thrive in our communities, enriching our lives.”
