A pilot project to help residents in financial difficulties has been launched by Adur & Worthing Councils amid fears for rising poverty levels post-pandemic.
Council staff have contacted scores of people in the most vulnerable households to offer help and advice about avoiding falling further into debt. Worthing Samaritans encourages the community to talk to those they care about
Worthing Samaritans is encouraging people in the local community to become better listeners so they can support friends and family who may be struggling, as part of the charity’s annual Talk to Us awareness campaign running throughout July.
With restrictions lifting and continued change, many people may find returning to everyday life more challenging than others.
To help, Worthing Samaritans is encouraging people to offer a listening ear to anyone they’re concerned about and have created useful tips from starting up a conversation and how to actively listen, to supporting someone who is going through a difficult time – available on their website www.samaritans.org/Worthing.
Throughout July, Samaritans branches across the UK and Republic of Ireland will be raising awareness of the services they offer locally, while also encouraging anyone in need of emotional support to contact their listening volunteers, who are available 24/7.

For many years, the town has had a strong reputation for producing national level competitors with Worthing Harriers one of the most active athletics clubs in the region.
While their home track at Worthing Leisure Centre is well-used by people of all ages, those in field events - notably the hammer - have to train further afield due to the deterioration of the throwing facilities.
After close discussions with the athletics club and operator South Downs Leisure, the Council is allocating funding out of its capital budget towards the purchase and installation of a new hammer cage for Worthing Harriers.
The upgraded facility will also be relocated to the centre of the running track, which will allow the current fenced off space in West Park to be used by dog walkers.
South Downs Leisure Trust, which owns the lease to the land, has given permission for the area to be opened and made available to dog walkers on most days but will still need access to the area when there are events.

Now the Council will spend its own money on the site and begin the search itself for a development partner. While the search is on it plans to use the site for temporary attractions such as Christmas Markets and other outdoor events!
