Construction work to breathe new life into Worthing town centre road has started

Construction has now begun on a major new regeneration scheme which will transform Worthing's Portland Road into a vibrant and inclusive space.

The work, which will see the street become an exciting destination where pedestrians are the priority, is expected for completion in the Spring of next year.

Local contractors Landbuild were awarded the £925,000 construction contract earlier this year and began major works this week.

Worthing Borough Council is managing the scheme, which is funded by West Sussex County Council and the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership.

Free ultrafast public WiFi, better lighting, comfortable seating areas, cycle racks and landscape planting will all form part of the scheme, which is designed to encourage people to visit the town centre and support local businesses.

Backers of the scheme see it as the ‘blue mirror’ to the South Downs, with all the environmental protection, tourism and potential job opportunities that could be created.
