ROADWORKS ALERT!!
Please see below an update from SGN about some upcoming Gas Mains replacement works being carried out from 8th January for 23 weeks on some of the main roads into and out of Worthing Town Centre and towards the A27.The roadworks are likely to cause significant impact on journey times.
Essential gas main replacement
Lane Closures - A24 & Sompting Avenue, Worthing
Starting on the 8 January for approximately 23 weeks
SGN contractors DJ Utilities will begin work to replace the gas main along A24 and Sompting Avenue. This essential work will involve the replacement of old metal gas pipes with new plastic pipes to ensure we can continue to provide the local community with a safe and efficient gas supply. The section of gas main being replaced has a history of gas leaks resulting in the need for disruptive emergency works - by replacing this pipe they'll minimise the risk of leaks in the future.
Due to the location of the gas main on the A24, for everyone’s safety varying traffic management will be required, the following outlines the intended plans
Phase one – A24 lane closures - 08 January 2024 for approximately 6 weeks
Engineers will be working along A24 in the centre two lanes from the junction of Queen Street to opposite Bohunt School. One lane will be closed southbound and one lane northbound.
Queen Street and Georgia Avenue will also be closed at their junction with the A24. This will mean no access in or out of these roads onto the A24.
Phase two – A24 lane closures - 19 February for approximately 6 weeks
Work continues on the A24 in the centre two lanes from junction of Bohunt School entrance to the junction of Sompting Avenue and Carnegie Road. One lane will be closed southbound and one lane northbound. Sompting Avenue will be made one-way eastbound only between junctions of A24 and Beaumont Road. Traffic from Carnegie Road will only be able to turn left onto the A24.
Phase three – Sompting Avenue - from approximately 2nd April for 10 weeks
Working on Sompting Avenue from A24 to Beaumont Road – Sompting Avenue will remain one-way eastbound only between junction of A24 and Beaumont Road. SGN appreciate their work will be disruptive for road users and the local community, please accept their apologies for the inconvenience these essential works will cause.
