Weekend of Summer events aim to create a buzz around bees and nature

A swarm of buzz-filled events and activities are set to take place at Brooklands Park - as the Bees&Seas team host a weekend of free, family events to celebrate National Bee Day.

Focused on this year’s theme ‘building back better for bees’, the jam-packed schedule aims to educate people on the actions that can be taken to restore, support and enhance the role of the ever-important pollinators.

Fixtures, some of which are talks and stalls, will run from Friday, August 20 - Sunday, August 22, and include making bee hotels, bee finger puppets and meeting beekeepers.

But there are also other, nature-themed events on offer - such as guided walks led by the Sussex Wildlife Trust and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Birds, big games, stone painting, flag and dreamcatcher making, litter picking, mini beast hunts - and more.

Bees&Seas is a local project born from a common passion to connect communities with nature, across the land and sea.

Three community groups including We Are FoodPioneers, Friends of Brooklands Park and Creative Waves have united to create a community beekeeping project and educational training space in Brooklands Park, where the events are being held.

Earlier this year, Worthing Borough Council worked with the groups to transform the previously disused yard.

The move is part of a wider aim of improving the local environment which includes the £2m upgrade of Brooklands Park itself into a science adventure park which has already seen the revival of the lake.

Debs Butler, Director at We Are FoodPioneers, is delighted with the support the Bees&Seas project has already attracted: “We can’t thank the local trusts, businesses and wider community enough for the funding, donations and support that have been received!

“This will see the site at Brooklands Park transformed into a natural asset for local people and wildlife.''

The Bees&Seas mission is to help engage the community with pollinators and conservation through a series of collaborative activities, workshops and volunteering opportunities.

Volunteers have been working hard to transform the industrial site and The Worthing Honey Collective have been busy preparing Honey Bees for delivery to their new home at the Brooklands Apiary.

New containers donated by Sussex Transport, which will be used as classrooms and workshops spaces, have been installed and painted - among other works.

Phase two of the project is expected to be complete by early next year.

Some events require pre-booking by email while others allow visitors to turn up on the day and join, but numbers may be restricted.
